Mitsubishi launches the Pajero Sport at Rs 23.5 lakh

mitsubishi pajero sport launch price in india

Mitsubishi has launched the Pajero Sport SUV in India. The Pajero Sport is powered by a 2477-cc diesel engine, producing 178 PS of power and 400 Nm of torque. The Mitsubishi Pajero Sport is equipped with the Super Select all-wheel drive system, which gives it true anywhere capability. Additionally, the Pajero Sport boasts of 215mm of ground clearance, and Mitsubishi claims it can scale slopes as steep as 35 degrees!

The Pajero Sport is based on Mitsubishi's popular L200 pick-up truck, and hence has sturdy body-on-frame construction. The L200 is proven to be an extremely reliable vehicle, and so the Pajero Sport should prove similar.

The Pajero Sport is priced at Rs 23.5 lakh, ex-showroom, Delhi. At this price, it gives Mitsubishi a perfect contender to compete with the likes of the Ford Endeavour and the Toyota Fortuner.
With the addition of this model, Mitsubishi is now offering its entire range of SUVs and soft-roaders in India.

Mitsubishi Outlander 7-seater launched

mitsubishi outlander 7-seater

Mitsubishi has sought to give the Outlander further value by offering a 7-seater model to complement the existing five-seater. The new 7-seater model gets a third row with a pair of jump seats, which can be stowed away when not in use. Of course, this thinly-padded seat cannot be construed to offer any serious utility over long drives.

Mitsubishi however hopes that the 7-setaer model will give it a competitive edge aagainst its main rivals, notably the Honda CR-V and the Maruti Suzuki Grand Vitara, both of which are available only with 5-seater options. The Outlander's 2.4-litre 170 PS petrol engine continues to power this soft-roader. There's no diesel option on the cards for the time being. No price has been announced, but the 5-setaer version retails for Rs 20.25 lakh, ex-showroom. We expect the 7-seater to cost just a few thousands more.

Mitsubishi Evo X: First Drive

300 horsepower on tap, gut wrenching torque to thunder through every sort of terrain, manners to make your mom-in-law see you in a new welcome light, ample space for four and yet having the capability to thunder from rest to 100km/h in under 4.5 seconds and on to an electronically limited terminal velocity of 250km/h, this is the new Mitsubishi Evo X. Photography: Kunal Khadse
It has to be the unlikeliest performance car in the world while on the other hand it does provide really fast motoring for four with an unbelievable ability to marry comfort, ride and handling and everyday practicality which is something you wouldn't expect from your temperamental Italian exotic sports car would you? Indian motoring enthusiasts prepare to say hello and get dazzled by the might Mitsubishi coming our way from the next month on. And it is no Lancer with a lipstick and mascara job but the real honest to goodness shebang geared to put the fear of coming second best into the supercar set.

I am referring to the latest Evolution X MR FQ300 and while this Mitsubishi's model designation is quite a mouthful, just see what comes along: 294PS and 366Nm of gut wrenching torque from a 1998cc four-cylinder turbocharged engine, a six-speed sequential shift transmission delivering drive to all four wheels, zero to 100km/h in 4.5 seconds and an electronically limited 250km/h top whack. The performance is truly mind-numbing and supercar humbling not just in sheer numbers specifically but when one revisits the stats and understands that it is a 2.0-litre engine dishing this out in a body-style in which you can take the mother-in-law to the market. Evolution is not just for the species but with the tenth edition in the series, it surely changes the rules of the motoring game.

The Evolution series of four-door, four-seater, four-wheel drive cars from Mitsubishi have always been something of a modern day motoring maverick. Thanks to its spectacular success in the World Rally Championships (four World Championship titles for Tommi Makinen from 1996 to 1999) plus umpteen rally successes the world over including our very own Team MRF winning the FIA Asia-Pacific Rally Championship, its place in the Japanese performance car pantheon was always right there at the top.
However, the Mitsubishi boffins weren't satisfied with just the rallyists dancing on the dirt and making merry. They wanted to deliver the same raw untamed power for those brave enough to use it on the streets as their everyday mode of motoring and thus was born the Evo cult - cutting across geographical, social and performance barriers.
The Evo X is probably the best in the Evolution series for it is undoubtedly a very quick and terrifyingly fast car but the Mitsubishi boffins have now smoothened the rough edges and endowed the car with manners, feel and behaviour which veer towards sensibility but without in any way dumbing its performance. In fact, many do state quite emphatically that it is the best ever in the Evo series and it shows. In its impeccable behaviour as well as in its refined approach to all aspects of the game, this is a car which can give a bloody nose not just to the high-powered M-spec BMWs but also scare myriad Ferraris and such!

The first thing which Mitsubishi did was to give the new car a completely new visual appeal and in so doing they changed the entire car. It is not just about the jet-fighter look up front but the manner in which the four-door saloon form has been crafted, the sheet metal almost shrink-wrapped tightly so as not to be bulbous but to present a lithe form in keeping with the performance potential on call. The track to wheelbase proportion is spot on and with the aerodynamicists having massaged the bodyshell in the wind tunnel (the pronounced boot spoiler, the cleverly vented diffuser at the rear, the almost flat underfloor and the subtle bodywork accents on the front as well as on the sides being proof this), the Evo X is purposeful yet attractive, designed to be slick enough to scythe through to its 250km/h top whack but sizzlingly hot at the same time to pull in an appreciative crowd.

Being anti-social is not on, especially for car makers in these tough times and so the muted growl from the exhaust and the slick shifting courtesy the twin clutch SST Sport Shift Transmission plus that leech-like grip as the car sticks to the road at whatever speed the pilot can dial in. What remains is that irascible acceleration making the man behind the wheel bellow in delight (I was and delighting in it) as you let the right foot plunge deeper and deeper while you use either the paddle shifters behind the steering wheel or the stylishly understated aluminium gear lever to get the motor to howl and power its way in near manic manner. Given its 1605kg kerb weight, each and every upshift pins the driver to his seat back in ample ferocity but with all the reassurance from its underpinnings (with electronic controls galore) that the car remains glued to terra firma and steers and handles with the very same purpose which made it a legend in the first place. The electronics keep on assessing the terrain and shuffle the torque between all four wheels and not just front to rear in the process delivering phenomenal control while going at illegal speeds in each and every gear!

The minute though the call comes from Mission Control to head home to the wifey and family, the Evo X plays family car to the hilt. Refined and smooth, with a comfortable ride quality despite the ultra low profile rubber it is shod with (Japanese Dunlops of size 245/40 R18 93Y), it will impress with the space on offer for its occupants. Of course there are short comings, because this is Japanese thought process at play where the quality of the cabin materials is still not yet in the European super league but having said that it is definitely of a very high order. Do remember that the interior is one of a high powered saloon and not a jet fighter and you get the drift. However, the Recaros are brilliant and the adjustability of the steering plus the overall driving position puts you firmly in the mood to let the brilliant four-cylinder motor make music.
Mitsubishi will have this legend available to deep pocketed Indian motoring enthusiasts from the next month on. Be prepared to pay what you would for a top of the line 3-series BMW but then where would you get this sort of engineering, performance and competition pedigree?

New seven-seater Mitsubishi Outlander Launched

Priced at Rs. 20.55 lakh, ex-showroom, Delhi, the new offering from Mitsubishi now comes with a seven-seat layout

New Mitsubishi Outlander seven seater

Just two weeks after the launch of the new Pajero, Japanese car maker Mitsubishi has launched a seven-seater version of the Outlander SUV. Earlier launched in 2010, the Outlander retains the 2.4-litre motor on the outgoing model that delivers 170PS of power and 226Nm of torque mated to a six-speed automatic gearbox.

From the outside, the new Outlander doesn’t look too different from the earlier model, sans the fighter jet-inspired grille that enhances its aggressive stance. Inside, the third-row seating with tumble function can now accommodate children. The car remains as feature-rich as before with keyless entry, a Rock Ford Fosgate 710-watt six CD changer with USB port, split tailgate, paddle shifts, cruise control and a 3-spoke steering wheel with integrated audio controls.

Third row ideal for children

Launched in just a single variant, the new Outlander comes with HID (High-Intensity-Discharge) headlamps with adaptive frontlight system or AFS. Safety features comprise ABS and EBD along with RISE (Reinforced Impact Safety Evolution) body and dual front passenger airbags. At Rs 20.55 lakh, ex-showroom, Delhi, the Outlander is now priced a notch above than the previous model.

The car-maker has been relatively slow in bringing its products to the country. Whether it has been the Lancer, the Lancer Cedia or the ultimate Lancer Evolution X, the company is taking one step at a time. However, with the back-to-back launch of the Pajero Sport and the new Outlander, HM-Mitsubishi seems to have turned a new leaf. The new Pajero also bowled over automotive journalists and buyers alike with its dapper looks and extreme off-roading capabilities.

The new Outlander also gets a host of safety technologies like forward collision mitigation system, adaptive cruise control and lane departure warning.
Mitsubishi are offering the new Outlander with two engines – a 2.0-litre in-line 4-cylinder SOHC MIVEC petrol and a 2.2-litre 4-cylinder turbocharged MIVEC diesel. The diesel Outlander claims to have emissions under 130 g/km all thanks to its technologies like the MMC stop-start system. Mitsubishi will be launching the new Outlander first in Russia and then in Europe, Japan, China and North America. At a later stage this year, there will also be an EV-based Outlander which will have MMC’s plug-in hybrid technology.

2012 Mitsubishi Pajero Sport first drive

New Mitsubishi Pajero Sport in India

Goes without saying that Toyota caught everybody napping when they launched the Fortuner, none more so than HM-Mitusbishi. Not that the Fortuner came out of the blue; it was hardly a secret that the SUV was India bound, that it took so long was what raised an eyebrow. And the other eyebrow joined it when pricing was revealed; at Rs 19lakh it immediately put every other SUV in that segment out of business and, as was to be expected, Toyota found a million buyers. So many in fact that those who have bookings are looking at 6-8 months for delivery .

That was probably the final wake-up call HM-Mitsubishi needed to stir it from its slumber. Here was a company sitting on a 24-carat heritage but for years soldiered on with mostly dated products both in the passenger car and SUV segment, stubbornly refusing to either innovate or excite. And sales numbers accurately reflected the Indian customer’s abhorrence to anything old. But things are moving along. Token gestures are being made to link the Cedia to its rallying heritage (this is the car which dominates Indian Rallying, but how many know that?).

And it starts with the same ingredients as the Fortuner. The Pajero Sport you see here isn’t even remotely related to the Pajero or the Montero that’s sold in India. Instead it’s based on the Triton pick-up truck platform (the Hilux pick-up platform underpins the Fortuner) and is designed and built for the same (emerging) markets as the Fortuner – South East Asia, South America, Latin America, South Africa and Russia (where it was launched, at the Moscow Auto Show, four years ago). It is not even built in Japan, Thailand is the Triton/Pajero Sport’s mother plant and that’s where we joined a bunch of Pajero owners on an off-road course designed to demonstrate just how capable the SUV is.

But before we start off I get an opportunity to do a walk around the car and have to say this is a good looking SUV. One of the reasons for the Triton pick-up’s popularity is because it cuts a very distinctive figure and the front end of the Pajero Sport is similarly good looking; it has Mitsubishi’s old family grille (seen on the old Outlander, not the new Evo-esque nose) flanked by a set of attractive clear-lens headlamps with projector beams. At the rear it sports a pair of slinky Alfa Romeo-esque tail lamps. In keeping with the traditional SUV formula there are strong haunches and the wheel arches are properly pumped up housing chunky 16-inch wheels but thanks to the ladder-frame chassis it has a high riding suspension set-up and the gap between the rear wheel arches and the tyres is gapingly wide. The Pajero Sport doesn’t lack road presence and it can actually be termed handsome; even aggressive in this sinister shade of black.

Being based on a rugged pick-up truck-derived ladder frame chassis gives the Pajero Sport a rugged go-anywhere ability and you don’t even blink when faced with challenging terrain or even slamming it into a few potholes. It runs a double wishbone set-up at the front with coil springs and a stabilizer bar while at the rear the Triton’s leaf springs have been ditched in favour of a more ride-quality-friendly three-link set-up with coil springs and stabiliser bar. And if the move away from leaf springs had a detrimental impact on off-road ability, well, I couldn’t tell.

As you can see from the pictures the Pajero Sport is very much in keeping with Mitsubishi’s exalted off-road heritage. If you remember, a couple of years back we took the Fortuner and its rivals on an off-roading expedition to Chikmagalaur and while we found the Toyota to be superior in every department, the one area where the venerable Pajero still scored was off-road. While we didn’t have similar levels of slush, on this purpose-built off-road course laid out at the Ruanpare fishing park outside Bangkok, the Pajero Sport felt every bit as capable as its namesake, tackling steep inclines, heart-stopping declines and foot-deep chassis-twisting ruts without so much as working up a sweat.

Unlike the Fortuner, the Pajero Sport doesn’t have full time four-wheel-drive, it uses the Super Select 4WD system similar to that on the Indian Pajero which allows shifting between rear-wheel-drive and four-wheel-drive at speeds of up to 100kmph. The centre differential can also be locked while on the move (not recommended for highway cruising) which makes all wheels turn at same speed thereby sending torque to the wheels with most traction and is particularly effective on loose surfaces. Shifting into 4x4 low doubles the torque going to both axles thereby giving terrific grunt to crawl up steep slopes but it requires stopping the vehicle, shifting to neutral and then wrestling the short stubby 4x4 lever all the way forward. It is an old school affair, a generation behind the fully electronic Super Select 4WD II system on the third-generation Pajero and Montero, but a lot of the charm of a genuine 4x4 SUV are these rugged man-toys that need a bit of muscle; flicking a switch is a lot easier but where’s the drama in that?

Hardcore 4x4 nuts can also get an optional locking rear differential that provides more traction than the limited slip rear differential. Our Pajero Sport didn’t have that option but with the generous 215mm ground clearance and excellent axle articulation she found traction and could keep going even with one wheel hoisted in the air and the other scrabbling on some loose sandy patches.

The Pajero Sport we drove had the 4M41 3.2-lire DI-D four-cylinder common-rail diesel engine that develops 165PS of power and 351Nm of torque. It’s the same unit as the Montero in India and refinement is only average; even with the windows up you do feel some of the vibrations and brisk motoring allows a fair amount of engine noise and boom to creep into the cabin. Performance is decent, 100kmph comes up in approximately 14.5 seconds but this is blunted by the automatic transmission that has only four speeds and despite a sport mode it isn’t very quick to react. What the engine has is good bottom end grunt which makes it relatively unstressed and negates the need to work the ’box hard.

The ladder frame chassis gives the Pajero Sport decidedly old school driving dynamics. The suspension is soft, under cornering there is a fair bit of body roll and understeer is ever present. Steering feel is almost non-existent and she does get upset by road imperfections but that’s no different from how the Fortuner behaves. None of the SUVs in this segment like to be hustled and the Pajero Sport doesn’t break any new ground in its handling behaviour. Ride quality is plush and compliant and allied to the comfortable seats will make mile munching very comfortable. She also has good brakes (406mm discs at the front and 295mm drums at the rear); I did try some repeated heavy braking and found no signs of rapid brake fade.

In Thailand the Pajero Sport can also be had with the 4D56 2.5-litre four-cylinder common-rail diesel (not to be confused with the current Pajero’s 4M4O 2.8-litre IDI diesel) and HM-Mitsubishi are mulling over getting this powerplant to India in an effort to keep costs in check. However this unit develops only 140PS of power. And in Thailand the 2.5 doesn’t get 4WD and that will be a problem – a Mitsubishi without four-wheel-drive will simply not wash with customers. It could be a mistake to get this engine to India particularly since the rest of the SUV is just so promising.

And the promise extends to the interiors that are a clear generation, even two, ahead of the current Indian Pajero. Those familiar with the inside of the Outlander will be at home in the Pajero Sport; the layout and design of the dash is similar and a lot of the parts including the steering wheel with integrated controls for both the stereo and cruise control are shared with the Outlander. It’s fully loaded too with ABS, twin front airbags, electric seats, leather, rear air-con and a touch screen navigation interface which might not be de-specced for India (remember the limited edition Cedia was the first Indian vehicle with in-built navigation). There is no integrated stereo and the Alpine head unit on the SUV we drove looked out of place but, like the Outlander, Indian vehicles should get a kicking Rockford Fosgate system with a subwoofer in the boot.

The black and beige two-tone colour scheme together with beige leather upholstery looks excellent and everything including the quality of plastics is high quality. It’s a cabin that looks and feels premium, befitting its expected Rs 20 lakh price tag. The cabin is also as spacious as the Fortuner’s with the driver and passenger well catered for. It has three rows of seats though, like all SUVs in this segment, the third row is fit only for children.

In the final analysis everything depends on pricing and HM-Mitsubishi simply cannot afford to price the Pajero Sport at a premium to the Fortuner, especially now with the cheaper 2WD Fortuner available in the market. Expected to be launched here in March this year, the Pajero Sport will initially be imported from Thailand with assembly operations to commence early next year.

7-seater Mitsubishi Outlander launched in India

2012 Mitsubishi Outlander 7-seater in India
Mitsubishi has started the year by launching the new Pajero Sport and now has topped it with the launch of the Outlander 7-seater. The new Outlander starts with a price tag of Rs 20.55 lakh (ex-Delhi), which is approximately Rs 40,000 cheaper than its 5-seater cousin. Powering it is a 170PS 2.4-litre petrol engine mated to a 6-speed auto transmission with a claimed fuel efficiency figure of 10.3kmpl.
While Mitsubishi unveiled the global Outlander replacement at the Geneva show, this is not the same model. While the international model had a face similar to the Montero, the Indian model continues with the EVO X face. Apart from the extra row of seats, in the interiors, the SUV comes with the same features as its 5-seater variant. Keyless entry, steering mounted controls, powered driver seat, HID headlamps with AFS are some of the key features. Safety-wise, the new Outlander gets ABS with EBD, twin airbags and a collapsible steering column.

Mitsubishi eyeing small car market

Mitsubishi Mirage in India
Japanese major Mitsubishi, better known for its rallying heritage and SUVS in India is planning to enter the ever popular small car segment. According to Masahiko Ueki, Japan executive officer, MMC and corporate General Manager of Asia and the ASEAN region, Mitsubishi plans to launch a small car within the next two to three years in India. Mitsubishi could probably bring in its new global small car, the 1.2-litre engine powered Mirage that was launched in Thailand some days ago. However, before that the manufacturer wishes to improve its dealer and service network, as it feels its current network is not strong enough to handle high volume products like hatchbacks.
Hence, Mitsubishi could look at bringing down its small car via the CKD route first. Ueki also added that they are exploring various options currently, and could even look at entering the small car segment entirely on its own, without its current partners, the Birla group owner Hindustan Motors. However he did not rule out the possibility of using HM’s Chennai plant in future for manufacturing its small car, and said they could even look at developing India as a hub for manufacturing small cars in future, just like Mitsubishi’s Japanese rivals Suzuki and Nissan
