Sports Car Volvo XC90 Prices Cut by 4 Lakh : Volvo India

NEW DELHI: Luxury car maker Volvo Car India on Thursday said it has cut the prices of its flagship sports utility vehicle XC90 by Rs 4 lakh to boost sales amidst the current economic downturn.

The XC90 D5 will now come at Rs 42.5 lakh, while the XC90 32 and XC90 V8 would be available for Rs 43.5 lakh and Rs 49.5 lakh, respectively.

"In lieu with current economic scenario and to provide luxury at right price, the prices for the flagship model Volvo XC90 SUV has been reduced by 7-8.5 per cent with effect from July 9," Volvo Car India said in a statement.

The company also announced opening of new dealerships at Pune and Chennai, taking the total number of dealerships in the country to seven.

"The expansion of our dealer network signals the importance of the Indian market to Volvo Cars. We believe that India holds tremendous potential for our brand and want to make sure that we fully capitalise on the opportunities available...," Volvo Car India MD Paul de Voijs said.

Recently, other car makers including Hindustan Motors, Ford India, Honda Siel Cars India and Hyundai Motor India had announced price cuts of Rs 6,000 on some of their models following additional duty excise reduction announced by Finance Minister Pranab Mukherjee during the Budget on July 6.

Volvo India has rolled out the XC60 in India. The stylish crossover is set to take on the BMW X3 and Audi Q5

The latest model to enter the Indian market from the stable of Scandinavian automaker Volvo is the XC60 Crossover. The XC60 incidentally kicks of a series of launches from Volvo India and this is definitely a good thing for the company has major potential to make inroads with the Indian audience.

The XC60 is powered by a 2.4 litre 5 cylinder turbo diesel engine that churns out a healthy 205bhp at 4000 rpm and makes 420Nm of torque between 1500-3250 rpm. Mated to a six speed steptronic gearbox, the vehicle is a powerhouse on wheels. It's capable of reaching the 100km/h mark in under ten seconds and the power doesn't let down till way up in the 3 digit speed range. Coupled with a permanent all wheel drive system and a rather decent ground clearance, this crossover can behave like a sedan yet deal with a fair share of off roading as well. Volvo S60: First Drive

Vikram Gour takes a look at the new Volvo S60 heading for Indian shores. It's touted to be the sportiest Volvo ever, but does it spell success in the Indian market?

Volvo is a brand associated with safety to the extent that the company has been at the pioneering end of many a safety feature. It’s an old statement but it still is apt and that is that there is a little bit of Volvo in every car.  However, with changing times, building a brand on a single pedestal had to change. Competition hasn’t been easy and there was no doubt in the fact that an element of excitement needed to be incorporated to the Volvo brand. As Volvo itself put it, it was time to get naughty!  Enter the Volvo S60, a sedan that is everything Volvo stands for, but with a naughty twist!

Touted as Scandinavian design, which can best be translated to subtle classic lines enhanced with a twist of taunt sporty lines to offer just the right mix of attitude with the end result being a very good looking car.  It has the ability to stand out amongst its peers and the fine lines are further enhanced by neat little touches. Probably the most noticeable such touch is the little lights on the snout. The bonnet flows muscularly down towards the front grill and on the fold are these neat lights that just look, well, for a better word-sexy.

The front end is purposeful and unlike Volvo cars till now, the head on look is young and youthful, yet reminiscent of the Volvo family DNA. From the side, the S60s clean lines flow seamlessly from the front to the sporty rear and clearly brings out a rather sporty stance. In fact Volvo claims that the S60 is their most sporty sedan design ever! The taunt rear and those signature Volvo rear lights work well to complete the exterior package and present a car that can hold its own against the competition, namely the Audi A4, BMW 3 Series and Mercedes C-Class. If design was a measure on how cars rank, then the S60 has managed to play catch-up in the market. Volvo has not been known for their design ability, but clearly that notion is set to change thanks to the striking S60.

Stepping inside the Volvo S60 is a pleasant experience. A plush interior with great fit and finish is what greets you and immediately you feel the amount of effort that has gone in to make this car stand up against the rest. The top spec models get neat leather just about everywhere and the neatness of how every item is fitted does stand out. I highly doubt that anyone will complain about the interiors or features of the S60. Adding to this is the amount of space. The S60 distinctly pipes the competition on interior space, which is a good thing considering how many Indian owners prefer to travel in the back seat of their luxury cars, be it an entry level luxury sedan. Though India, might not have governed this aspect, Volvo still comes out on top for having nurtured this thought from the design stages itself.

For India, Volvo will offer the S60 with two engine options, namely a petrol tarmac scorcher in the form of a turbocharged inline 6 cylinder motor that churns out 304 bhp@ 5600 rpm and makes a class leading torque of 440Nm between 2100-4200 rpm, and a diesel drinking 5 cylinder engine that offers 205bhp@ 4000 rpm and 420Nm of torque between 1500-3250 rpm. Though internationally the S60 has numerous engine options, Volvo is literally bringing in the two most powerful engines in class to our shores.  All this power translates to an enthusiastic motoring experience. Fun, agile and dynamic may not be common descriptive of cars from this marquee; however with the S60, Volvo has managed to do it and that too with style. No doubt the S60 is a joy to drive and Volvo has worked hard to ensure that the chassis and systems conform to the entire spicy drive feel. All wheel drive, a neatly set up suspension that doesn’t allow for too much roll, yet isn’t rigid to mess up ride quality, a decent steering feedback and a car that goes in the direction you point it in just makes for brilliant motoring.  With all these changes however, Volvo hasn’t forgotten its true roots-safety.

The S60 also boasts of being a rather safe place to be inside. Apart from the numerous gizmos and gadgets that are now almost standard fitments in all Volvos, the S60 boasts of an advanced pedestrian recognition system. This state of the art safety feature is a boon for city drivers especially for it really works at speeds a shade under 40 kmph. A number of cameras allow the car to ‘see’ an obstacle in its path, and should the driver not react, the car will automatically bring the vehicle to a halt before hitting the obstacle. It’s not the smoothest braking, but it does get the job done and should also wake the driver up!

So, at the end of the day, what you get is a car that is safe, fun, dynamic, stylish and as informed by Volvo, it is also cheaper than the competition. All this makes you wonder as to what the catch is right? Well, that is where the naughty grin appears on the Volvo salesman as he tells you that there is no catch!

Having said that, there is a small catch and that is from the company’s end in terms of brand value. Volvo India has been treading the Indian waters with caution. Unlike Audi or BMW that just went ahead at an aggressive speed, or Mercedes-Benz , which enjoyed a decade of no competition, Volvo’s foray into the market can best be described as one little step at a time. Though this will finally pay off in terms of having a strong and deep rooted understanding of the Indian market, it has delayed the propagation of the brand name and this is where the challenge lies. Volvo India has a great product coming in the form of the S60, it is now time to get the marketing and brand building in place to ensure that the S60 doesn’t remain in the dark corners of the market, but gets its due share of the limelight. The time is now, for these efforts will pave the way for future launches.

Volvo CNG bus trials begin in Navi Mumbai

Volvo Buses have started trials of their Volvo 8400 low floor CNG city bus in Navi Mumbai. Currently Navi Mumbai Municipal Transport (NMMT) operates 26 Volvo 8400 city buses which go from Navi Mumbai to different parts of Mumbai. These CNG buses will have an average running of 300 kilometres each day. New Delhi holds the distinction of being the first place to have Volvo CNG buses on trial.
These CNG buses are built by a highly experienced team of experts from Sweden and India at Volvo’s state of the art manufacturing facility in Hoskote, Bangalore. To get maximum fuel efficiency, Volvo has fine tuned the gear system which operates at the most efficient speed ranges in terms of fuel consumption. Volvo claims that these CNG buses have the best power-to-weight ratio in their class. Mr. Hanumant Dalvi, chairman, NMMT,said, “We are building a fruitful relationship with Volvo and people of Navi Mumbai have truly benefitted from the Volvo experience. The operations of these buses have set a benchmark in this region. The Kharghar-Borivali route via Thane has witnessed a strong demand for more buses to be operated here. The trials with the Volvo CNG City Bus offers us another unique choice from Volvo and the Volvo buses have helped deliver across all aspects – from passenger preference to good operating economy for the corporation.”

Auto Expo 2012 - Volvo Buses showcases Volvo 7700 Hybrid bus

Volvo Buses today showcased their hybrid bus the Volvo 7700 Hybrid at the Auto Expo 2012 in New Delhi. This bus has been in operation in 20 cities across the world after its production began in May 2010. It has seen savings of up to 37 per cent in fuel costs and over 50 per cent reduction in hazardous emissions.
With this vehicle Volvo Buses intend to showcase their readiness for India. Akash Passey, managing director & CEO, Volvo Buses in South Asia, said, “At Volvo we have what is considered today as the world’s most efficient hybrid solution. Importantly it’s a part of our regular production system, developed by Volvo in-house, and proven in real operations for a long time now. The Volvo Hybrid is very much the solution cities & environmentalists have asked for. We are ready. All we await is the demand & the direction from the authorities, so that we can apply this solution specifically to Indian needs.
The Volvo 7700 Hybrid has a small diesel engine and an electric motor, which can be used either independently or jointly. The battery that drives the electric motor is charger through re-generative braking. The diesel engine also shuts off when the bus is stationary and does not start again till the bus reaches15-20kmph further saving fuel.

Shocking prices for Volvo’s new D3 variant

 Volvo Auto India has launched the D3, a new variant of its existing product portfolio in India. The S60, S80 and XC60 get a new 5-cylinder turbo diesel engine under their hoods. This engine produces 165PS of power and a whopping 400Nm of torque. Volvo has priced the S60 at Rs 23.99 lakh, the S80 at Rs 31.99 lakh and XC60 at Rs 33.99 lakh for the D3 variants, ex-showroom Delhi. Furthermore, as an introductory offer, Volvo is offering a Rs 80,000 discount on all the D3 variants. These variants are now available at all Volvo dealerships.
Volvo says that with the new D3 engine, the S60 will deliver 18.5kmpl, the S80 17.8kmpl and the XC60 14.7kmpl. The D3 is claimed to have a different injection system for the piezoelectric fuel injector in comparison with the D5 engine and this gives it a smoother driving experience. As part of its safety package, the S60 D3 and S80 D3 get whiplash protection; active bending lights, dynamic stability traction control and laser assisted automatic braking. The XC60 D3 gets these features and also roll stability control and side impact protection system.

Volvo V40 gets external airbags to protect pedestrians

Whilst Volvo is known to herald new safety techniques each time a new car is launched, this time around, they have outdone themselves. Their 2013 V40 hatchback, apart from the plethora of safety features, now carries external air bags to protect the pedestrians.  These airbags are a world first and are located at the base of the windshield of the car and are activated in the event of collision with a pedestrian. The sensors in front bumper register the physical contact between the car and the pedestrian. The rear end of the bonnet is released and at the same time elevated by the deploying airbag. The inflated airbag covers the area under the raised bonnet plus approximately one third of the windscreen area and the lower part of the A-pillar. Further to this, Volvo has also tweaked their City Safety feature wherein it is now operational even at speeds of 50kmph, up from the earlier 33kmph limit.

European regulations require that a car’s hood should be designed such that it should cause minimal damage to the pedestrians in case of an accident. This required manufacturers to significantly alter the design of the hood often leading to ungainly results. Now, with this new technology from Volvo, it seems that those days will seem a distant past.

Volvo revises car prices by Rs 1 lakh

Volvo Auto India has announced a price hike for its S60, S80, XC60 and XC90 models post the recent Union Budget 2012. The price increase is in the region of 2-3 per cent and earlier while the S60 D3 Kinetic variant was priced at Rs 24.21 lakh, the new pricing is Rs 25 lakh. The S80 which was for Rs 27 lakh has now been priced at Rs 28 lakh. Similarly the SUV XC60 (D3 engine) will now be available at Rs 35.25 lakh. All these prices are ex-Delhi.

VolVo S60 will be launched in India in February, 2011

Volvo launches S60 in India by March 2010
