AUDI A6 3.0 TDI REVIEW,AUDI A6 REVIEW

DESIGN & ENGINEERING
Audi seems to be on top of its game as far as design is concerned. Both the A4 and A8L are superbly balanced and a treat to look at, and now this new A6 takes the game even further. Yes, it is a bit generic and Audi design cues are all over the car but as far as proportions, forms, detailing and even bright work go, Audi’s designers don’t seem to have put a pencil wrong. The sweeping roof and rear quarter-glass carry over the previous A6’s look and the beltline reminds you of the earlier car too.

So this is both an Audi and an A6, no question but it’s still very fresh and new. Those fabulous LED headlamps, the tightly cropped grille and the faux large inlets give it a unique identity. The rear of the car however is very A8, especially the elongated tail-lights and the manner in which the spoiler on the boot sweeps over.

Dimensionally this car has a slightly longer wheelbase and is also slightly wider than before but its overall length is a bit less. Also reduced significantly through systematic effort is the weight. The new A6 may be built on Audi’s MLB platform, also shared with the A4, but there are plenty of aluminium bits here. Bonnet, fender, doors and the boot lid are all made of aluminium and under the skin things like cross-members, suspension towers and even the bulkheads are made from the lighter material too. The result of all these weight-saving measures is a car that weighs 80kg less than the outgoing one, which gives it an advantage as far as performance, handling and even fuel efficiency are concerned.

The A6 also comes equipped with Audi’s Quattro four-wheel-drive system that gets a 60:40 rear bias. Adaptive air suspension and Audi Drive Select allow the driver customisable setting for systems like dampers, steering and engine mapping.

An interesting feature is how the adaptive restraint system networks with Audi’s ‘Pre Sense Basic’ safety system. It detects how tall the driver and front passenger are and, if necessary, the airbags can quickly blow down a portion of their air volume to cushion the head and chest more gently in a crash!
INTERIOR
Just as avant garde-looking as the exteriors are the gobsmacking insides. Again this is an Audi for sure but with some new shapes, new details and an even higher standard of fit and finish that makes you want to paw the cabin almost continuously. The wraparound design that starts with a wedge of wood on the doors is simply stunning and features from the A8, like the fabulous instrument cluster with the big screen in the centre straddled by raised dials, the touchpad control on the transmission tunnel and Audi’s new asymmetric chrome highlights, lift the mood of the cabin to a different class. And there is visual drama here too. The MMI screen, for example, pops out from behind the vents or can be tucked away to give back the clean look of the dash.

Long-limbed drivers will find themselves particularly comfortable behind the wheel. There is acres of space for the driver, adjusting the seat and steering wheel allows you to find the perfect driving position, and visibility is very good as well even when you reverse. The driver’s seat, however, doesn’t feel very large and that’s the case in the rear as well. Though the rear seat has loads of legroom and decent headroom too, it is set a touch too low and this adversely impacts under-thigh support. It’s comfy enough at the back but we feel the rear seat could have been slightly larger and offered more support.

Audi hasn’t stinted on features. Standard on the new A6 is the keyless entry and go, sunroof, four-zone climate control, iPod and Bluetooth connectivity, leather seats, a 20GB hard drive and adaptive air suspension. You can equip it further with LED headlamps (as fitted to the test car), the MMI touchpad, DVD changer, reverse camera and a BOSE sound system. And, as expected, there is a long list of safety features too. It’s got ESP, ABS, six airbags, the Pre Sense system and of course the all-wheel-drive grip.  Strangely, there is no stop-start or energy recovery system on the diesel. These will feature on the petrol versions that will debut later though.
PERFORMANCE & ECONOMY
Audi’s new-generation 3.0 TDI is nothing short of a gem. A thoroughly reworked motor that now has vastly reduced levels of internal friction, this V6 diesel is so good that it could be a game-changer for Audi.

For a start it rarely ever feels like a hulking big diesel, either in the manner in which it revs or even how it performs under load. It may not rev as enthusiastically as a BMW straight six nor have a pleasing snarl but apart from this, Audi’s V6 has the BMW licked.

First of all, idle is super smooth. There is no diesel clatter, only the faintest of vibrations filters through the bulkhead and this motor feels so smooth when you tap the accelerator that it all but purrs. And it’s very responsive as well. Accelerate away from a standstill and it responds almost petrol-like but with plenty of additional torque tossed in for good measure. Progress is pretty linear too. This motor makes an impressive 51kgm of torque from just 1400rpm, so even at 1200rpm, there’s a huge amount of pulling power ready to be tapped. At moderate revs there’s a quiet humming sound from under the hood and just punting the A6 around gives you the feeling you are driving a large-capacity V8.

Devastating is an overused word, but performance for the most part is just that. Once past 2000rpm, the motor just catapults you forward and the push in the back stays very firm all the way to 4000rpm, soon after which a quick upshift gets the whole process going again. And with approximately 245bhp being unleashed at this engine speed, the scenery comes flying at you with a vengeance. Zero to 100kph takes just 6.3 seconds, making this one of the fastest four-door cars in our market. Overtaking is merely a tap of the throttle away, and the massive bursts of power unleashed when you go full throttle are truly gratifying. This engine’s mid-range is its strength and the surge of power when you hit the sweet spot in the rev band is addictive. Get behind the wheel on an open road, and all you want to do is drive, drive and drive and when you get home here’s a motor you want to roll up, tuck under your arm and take with you.

Also well mated and well up to the task is Audi’s seven-speed twin-clutch automatic. Upshifts are a quick flick of the paddle-shift away and the gearbox shifts really well in manual mode too, increasing driving pleasure considerably. However, it does become a touch slow to downshift when cruising, and you can’t get away from the initial lag, typical of the twin-clutch system which you don’t experience in a conventional torque converter-equipped auto.

The new A6 is lighter, has more gears to play with and is also running an engine that boasts considerably reduced friction. So it’s no surprise that this car is much more efficient than the one it replaces. And that’s despite not having a fully integrated efficiency system similar to Merc’s BlueTEC or BMW’s Efficient Dynamics.
Our test showed that the A6 used a litre of diesel to travel 9.3km in city traffic conditions, and efficiency on the highway was 14.3kpl which is impressive for such a powerful saloon.
 RIDE & HANDLING
With its new stiffer chassis and adjustable air springs and dampers, Audi has found a happy compromise as far as ride and handling is concerned. The dampers set in ‘Comfort’ are extremely indulgent and the A6 really did surprise us with how well it rode. Helping the secondary ride in no small measure are the 225/55-R17
tyres whose relatively high profile provide considerable cushioning over bad roads.

The A6 glides over rough sections silently and with very little movement of the body, low speed ride is better than expected from an air suspension system. Even wildly undulating surfaces are ridden over with a very high degree of body control. Large holes, however, do result in a sharp thunk due to the short-travel suspension and the lightweight A6 does shudder a bit over particularly bad patches. Most disconcerting was the fair amount of tyre and road noise which is a problem that afflicts other Audis
like the A8 and A7 too.

Audi, however, has done well to make Sport mode quite comfortable and useable. It’s not as hard-edged or bone jarring as you would imagine and you can enjoy the best of what this car has to offer on some of our better surfaced roads.

The A6 is quite adept at shrink-wrapping itself around you. It feels no bigger than an A4 from behind the wheel, acts like a car with only half its mass when asked to change direction and the Quattro system provides it prodigious grip too. The A6 is fun to drive but not brilliantly so. There’s a lot of understeer to deal with when pushed hard but the biggest party pooper is the steering which feels numb and devoid of feel, even in ‘Dynamic’ mode. As a result, it’s not a very engaging drive and the brakes feel mushy too.

Also unique for a car in this class is the lift feature that makes the air springs raise the car 20mm to help it clear bad roads or extra large speedbreakers at low speed. Very practical.
  VERDICT
There is no doubt that Audi has taken the game considerably forward with the new A6. It's almost everything luxury car owners would look for- a class-leading diesel motor that is powerful and incredibly refined, interior appointments that can embarrass a luxury suite, and a comfortable ride. The A6 isn't particularly engaging to drive but it can still indulge enthusiastic owners a fair bit. We wish the rear seats were a bit more supportive and there is some road noise present as well. However, you can't get away from the fact that this is a well rounded and a superbly engineered car that has certainly set a new benchmark in its class.

Audi S6/S7/S8

Audi S6/S7/S8
Think of Audi’s ‘S’ cars as the sportier cousins of the normal line-up with the S variant’s more powerful engines and slightly extroverted design details being the key differentiators here. India will get the entire S range that includes the S4, S5, S6, S7 and S8 in 2012.  The new S6 that was launched at the 2011 Frankfurt Motor Show comes with a 414bhp, 4-litre twin-turbo V8. Performance will be entertaining, to say the least.  Another new addition to the S line is the S8. Marrying sports car performance to limo-like luxury, the S8 shares its engine with the S6, but power is an even higher 513bhp. Pricing is yet not known, but expect these S cars to cost considerably more than the current range-topping variants for each model. However, the S5 will be a cheaper option to the more powerful RS5. S6 will spearhead Audi’s S line’s entry into India. S8 is sports car and limo rolled into one. . Sportier petrol S7 will join diesel A7 sibling.

AUDI Q3 2012

Audi Q3
It may look like a shrunken Q5, but Audi’s latest mini-SUV has a distinct personality of its own. When launched in May 2012, the Q3 will be the most affordable Audi SUV in India. However, there is nothing cheap about the Q3’s quality which is comparable to Audi’s line-up of saloons and larger SUVs. There is fair space for four adults inside while Audi’s Quattro all-wheel-drive system should also ensure you can get a bit adventurous on weekend excursions. The Q3 will be launched with a 176bhp, 2-litre turbo diesel while a 211bhp 2-litre TFSI turbo-petrol engine will also be a part of the model mix. Prices are likely to start at Rs 27 lakh. This could be the game changer for Audi.

Audi relaunches the TT with 2.0-litre engine

michael perschke audi tt

Audi has relaunched the TT Coupe, powered by a 2.0-litre TFSI engine producing 214 PS of power. The TT now costs Rs 48.36 lakh, ex-showroom and will be available at Audi dealerships around India from June 2012.

The new Audi TT Coupe might have slightly less power (the earlier 3.2-litre FSI engine produced 250 PS), but the addition of a turbocharger has endowed the smaller-capacity TT with more torque, with the engine producing 350 Nm of max torque vis-à-vis 320 Nm available earlier. This has ensured the TT is quicker to 100 km/h, recording a time of just 5.6 seconds, which is a tenth quicker than the earlier car. Although we haven’t done a full road test, we expect the in-gear times to be slightly better as well.

The new TT also features Audi Spaceframe Technology, or ASF. The TT Coupe’s body-in-white weighs just 206 kilograms. Aluminium is used for the body panels and structure up to the B-pillar, while the rest of the car is made of ultra-high strength steel. The aluminium components account for 140 kgs of the body by weight.

The new Audi TT will hope to compete with the likes of the BMW Z4 and the Nissan 370 Z, bth of which have larger capacity 6-cylinder engines. In this class of car, image is everything, so Audi might face a challenge convincing customers to go for a 4-cylinder sports car. But the cheaper list price and lower running costs might just tempt a few buyers to go for it.

The face lifted Audi A4 arrives in India

new audi a4 launch

Audi has announced the launch of the face lifted Audi A4. The A4 with its newly acquired appeal reaches out to a younger and much wider customer base. Priced from Rs 27.33 lakh onwards (ex-showroom Maharashtra for 1.8 TFSI petrol base model), the A4 will now be Rs 70000 cheaper than it predecessor.

“The new Audi A4 with its progressive design, efficient driving dynamics and class defining interiors will take the driving experience to a new paradigm for all our customers. The young and sleek looks will appeal to the younger generation who have arrived in life and are looking to affirm their status and positions among their peers. The engines with their superior technology will give better fuel efficiencies while the new and improved lines and interiors will certainly turn heads and add to the comfort and luxury that one expects from Audi. The outstanding sales performance in the first quarter of 2012 of its predecessor encouraged us to pre-pone the launch of the new Audi A4”, said Michael Perschke, Head, Audi India.

The A4 will be available in three engine options – 1.8 TFSI petrol (priced at Rs 27.33 lakh), 2.0 TDI (priced at Rs 29.38 lakh) and 3.0 TDI quattro variant (priced at Rs 38 lakh). All engines are turbocharged direct-injection systems; the recuperation system is standard throughout and the start-stop system is standard in petrol variants.

The fuel efficiency on an average has improved by 10 per cent on the face lifted A4. The 1.8 TFSI offers a fuel efficiency of 15.64 km/l (ARAI) – fuel efficiency has improved by 25 per cent compared to its predecessor, while the 2.0 TDI offers an efficiency of 16.55 km/l (ARAI).

The A4 is the first Audi which offers the fully integrated Audi Car Life product, which combines financing, service plan, insurance and extended warranty.

The A4 competes with the Mercedes C Class and BMW 3 Series and it is one of Audi's highest selling products having sold more than 10 million vehicles since 1972. It has a long and successful history in the Audi fold.

Audi A3 pencilled in for 2013 India launch (Upcoming Cars)

audi a3 sedan india

WHEN: 2012
HOW MUCH: Rs 16 – 20 lakh
ENGINES: 1.8-litre petrol, 2.0-litre diesel
COMPETITION: VW Jetta, Maruti Kizashi, Skoda Laura

The Audi A3 saloon is being readied for an Indian market launch, sometime in 2013. The pictures you see here are of the A3 saloon concept, first displayed at the 2011 Geneva Motor Show. This year, Audi previewed the hatchback version of the A3, which will be going on sale in Europe soon.

The Audi A3 will eventually span an entire range of body-styles, including a two-door coupe, cabriolet, and station-wagon, in addition to the more common hatch and sedan versions. The new A3 is based on Audi’s or rather the Volkswagen Group’s new ‘MQB’ platform, which will also form the basis of the new A4, due next year.

audi a3 interior

The A3 sedan will be approximately the same size as the VW Vento and the Skoda Rapid, but will understandably be far more plush, with a full multimedia suite on the inside and premium feel materials. Of course, you also get four rings on the grille rather than a simple VW logo. Audi is keen to point out that with the A3 it wants the brand to appeal to younger buyers, and so the full multimedia experience, along with large touch-screen interface, is a key part of the car’s features.

audi a3 rear seat
Whether the contrast upholstery makes it to the India model, or is even offered as an option, remains to be seen.

The new Audi A3 has been launched with three engines just now, which include the familiar 1.8 TFSI petrol and 2.0-litre TDI diesel motors. There’s also the 1.4 TFSI petrol in the base version. Later, Audi plans to introduce the 1.6 MPI and 1.6 TDI motors to the A3 as well. What’s significant is that these motors are already used in VW AG cars as sold in India. For India however, Audi may resort to the larger engines in the range to ensure that the car feels premium, and does not come across just as a stylised Vento.

Pricing will be important, but there are hints that this could well be a sub-20 lakh rupee car. Audi is mum on its exact plans for now, but the car is almost as good as confirmed for an India market launch. The proposed free-trade agreement or FTA with the European Union (EU) could help to ensure that the car’s pricing remains extremely competitive.

Revised Audi Q5 expected by year-end (Upcoming Cars)

new audi q5 coming to india

Audi has just revealed details of a revised and updated version of the popular Q5 SUV. Although not a completely new model, the revised Q5 does have upgraded engines, re-tuned suspension and a mildly revised exterior. Completing the package is an upgraded interior as well.

The popular Q5, first launched in 2009, has been a strong seller for Audi, notably in India. The positive spin-off generated by the gargantuan Q7 has paid Audi handsome dividends, and in maany ways the Q5 was considered the ideal fil, especially on Indian roads. Now however, with the imminent launch of the baby Q3, the Audi Q5's position was looking a little tenuous.

Right on cue: enter the 'new' Q5. So what all is new? For starters, the face of the new Q5 has been revised with a subtly altered front grille and headlights. The grille now gets the high-gloss piano black treatment which we've seen on the recently relaunched Audi TT. The headlights have LED running lights, but instead of a string of LEDs at the bottom of the lenses, they now run around the periphery of the headlamp lenses, just like in the Audi Q3. The honeycomb mesh surrounding the fog lamps has been dispensed with. The big grille or 'Bavarian beard' has been altered as well, with chamfered surfaces at the upper end where it meets the bonnet.
The tail lights of the new Audi Q5 also get the perimeter LED effect.

On the inside, Audi has resorted to utilising a combination of leather, piano black embellishments and veneer insert, which do brighten up the cabin. The major visual difference is the steering wheel, with a round sterring boss replacing the squarish, angular steering wheel boss of the previous model. Audi has also simplified the MMI interface with fewer buttons, which it claims is more intuitive to use. On-board internet is available in the European version, which can also pre-select and programee up to 5,000 internet radio stations. This feature however will not be available in the Q5 in India.

new audi q5 interior

Audi has also revisted the Q5's suspension and drivetrain, with retuned springs and dampers and a lighter subframe for the suspension assembly. This has resulted in some wieght saving as well, and the new Q5 is 40 kgs lighter than its predecessor. The engines have been carried over, but have been retuned for more power and better fuel efficiency. The 2.0-litre TDI diesel has been uprated to 177 PS and 380 Nm from 170 PS and 350 Nm in the existing Q5. This same diesel motor in this same state of tune will also be available in the Q3 when it goes on sale this June. The 2.0 TFSI petrol motor has also seen a bump in power to 225 PS from 210 PS, although the torque rating remains unchanged at 350 Nm. The 3.0 TDI diesel, which also has shift paddles for the S-Tronic gearbox, sees power climb nominally from 240 to 245 PS, but has a huge amount of torque, which is now 580 Nm from 500 Nm previously. This should endow the Q5 with shattering overtaking capabilities!

The new Audi Q5 goes on sale in Europe sometime in the second half of 2012, with sales of right-hand drive models pencilled in for the last quarter. It is likely that Audi India will begin assembling the new Q5 in Aurangabad by year-end. A price revision seems inevitable, which we expect to be in the range of 5 to 10 %. Nevertheless, the revised Q5 should get a boost for its second innings, especially in the face of newer competition like the recently launched BMW X3.
