Garware Motors Hyosung GT650R & ST7

Expected price: Rs. 4.5 to 7 lakh (ex-showroom)

Hyosung GT650R

The Garware-Hyosung marriage will introduce the GT650R middle-weight sports model and the ST7 cruiser motorcycle by early 2011. The GT650R will be the first real middleweight motorcycle to hit the Indian roads at an affordable price-point. Garware Motors has announced that it will also bring the naked variant of the GT650 to offer more variety to the Indian enthusiasts. The St7 will demand slightly more premium for its robust chrome-laden cruiser charm but it will still be competitively priced. The bikes will come as CKDs and they will be assembled at a facility in Wai near Pune.

Hyosung unveils the GT650R and the ST7 jointly with Garware Motors

Korean bike-maker Hyosung in collaboration with Garware Motors has introduced two new premium 600cc plus models in the Indian market

While premium cars have already made their foray into the fast-growing Indian automobile market, foreign bike companies are still yet to make an impact in the premium sector. Noticing the demand and lack of options in the 600cc segment in India, Hyosung in collaboration with Garware Motors today ventured into the uncharted waters of the niche middle-weight premium motorcycle segment with its GT650R sport model and the powerful sports-cruiser ST7. The bikes will be imported to India as Completely Knock Down (CKD) units and they will be assembled at Garware Motor’s newly setup assembly line in Wai, near Pune.

The final prices have not been announced yet, but the company officials present at the launch did let out approximate figures for both the models and by the looks of it, the pricing seems to be spot on with the GT650R full-faired version costing fewer than five lakh rupees on road while the power-cruiser ST7 set to be priced sub-7 lakh rupees on road! The officials said the company will also bring in the naked version of the GT650R that is expected to have an even more competitive pricing.

Highlight of this venture will be the service backup from Garware Motors with solid technical support from Hyosung. The company will commence its operations with dealerships in ten cities, chiefly targeting the metros and the tier 1 markets to begin with. Bookings are expected to start by early next year and the bikes will hit the roads by first quarter of next calendar year. The company will provide mobile service backup to all its customers along with ‘service-at-home’ option for the motorcycles. Focus is also on maintaining a strong parts inventory in order to assure good after-sales service to the consumers.Hyosung GT650R EFi

Garware Motors is a completely new venture undertaken by Garware Bestretch marking the return of the Garware Group back into the automotive sector. Garware Motors has had a long history with automobiles and was one of the first firms in the pre-independence era to import luxury cars to India, until 1955, when the government brought a ban on import of automobiles. Established in 1994, Garware Bestretch is a part of the multimillion-dollar RBG Group that enjoys a solid presence and reputation worldwide in various fields. Hyosung Motors was taken over by the giant Korean conglomerate, S&T Motors (Science & Technology Motors) in 2007 and the company’s operations are headed by Jimmy Park, COO, S&T Motors, who was present for the launch.

First Ride: Hyosung GT650R EFi

How well do you think a Korean sports motorcycle can be? We take the 'Made-in Korea' Hyosung GT650R for a spin just about a month before its scheduled Indian debut

Its one of my favourite set of twisty roads and the notorious left corner infamous for scaring many a bikers is approaching rather quickly than my reflexes are used to. It is an uphill section and apart from the motorcycle I am on, all other settings are more or less same. The Hyosung GT650R that I am riding is climbing fast and is taking corners with a ferocious attitude and there is nothing subtle about its power delivery. It is what you would call, umm… raw or maybe even a little bit rowdy. But for someone who likes pure no-nonsense thrill and excitement, the GT650R brings a lot to the table.

As the tightening corner looms up ahead, I brake hard and expect something dramatic to occur, but the Hyosung GT650R shows no signs of upsetting behaviour or jittery nature. The 41mm upside-down front forks with adjustable damping and compression (but no preload setting) promptly take charge of the sudden weight transfer and the twin disc rotors fitted upfront on the GT650R drop speed with phenomenal efficiency. I soon realize that now I am under-speeding for the corner. Damn!

It is the first time that I am riding a 650cc v-twin engine on this stretch of curvy tarmac and the experience is novel and extremely gratifying. The power delivery is smooth and casual till upto the 5,500rpm mark coupled with a rather sweet and smooth exhaust note playing in the background as the bike effortlessly crosses the 100km/h mark without batting an eyelid. But once the rev-counter needle whizzes past the 6000rpm mark, the V-Twin growl turns loud, raspy and angry like a rumble from a battle-tank.

There is a lot of potential and performance lurking inside the Hyosung’s fuel-injected 649cc V-Twin engine, which apparently is identical to the motor that powers the super-popular Suzuki SV650. Hyosung started with making motorcycles for the South Korean market under license from Suzuki and the V-twin engine configuration of the GT650R seems quite similar to that of the cult-followed Suzuki SV650. None of the two bike-makers have confirmed if the two models share common parts but on paper it’s quite telling. Regardless of whether it’s the same engine or not, one thing Hyosung needs to really look into is the fuelling system of the GT650R. The throttle response is awfully jerky with an on/off feel even with slightest variation on the throttle grip. And as the speed increases, the jerkiness due to the fuelling stops being just a twinge and grows to be a major quandary playing havoc with your lines, judgement and hence, safety.

Overlooking the fuelling glitch, the liquid cooled DOHC 8-valve 90-degree v-twin motor of the GT650R seems like an extremely potent package throwing oodles of horsepower and torque for a middleweight motorcycle. It produces best-in-class horsepower figure of 72PS at 9,000rpm and 61Nm of torque peaking at 7,250rpm, which is distributed evenly through the rev-range for good rideability and solid in-gear acceleration. Good in-gear acceleration means strong exits out of the corners and swift overtaking maneuvers through traffic on road without having to go through the six-speed gearbox of the GT650R each time you want to pass a vehicle. The twisty roads are long gone and I am over this open arrow-straight highway doing about 50km/h in sixth gear. I open the throttle with a little more urgency than usual and the GT650R lurches forward with great enthusiasm – just like you would expect a middleweight sports model to perform and nothing short of its Japanese or European V-twin rivals.

The Hyosung GT250R cometh

Hyosung GT250R in India

The performance bike scenario in India has been on the rise with the launches of the KTM 200 Duke, Pulsar 200NS apart from the Triumphs, Harleys and the Ducati. And Hyosung – the ones who started it all don’t want to be left behind.  Remember the company’s earlier offerings – the Comet GT250 and sports cruiser Aquila? They are now ready to bring in the GT250R, a fully faired bike with similar styling as its bigger 650cc cousin, the GT650R. While power figures haven’t been revealed yet, expect the bike to be in showrooms by May this year with a very competitive pricing. Hyosung will also be launching the naked GT250 at a later stage with significant price cuts.

Hyosung fires second salvo

Hyosung GT250R in India

Garware Motors, who sell Hyosungs in India, have confirmed that the GT250R is set for launch in May 2012. We expect the price to be around Rs 2-2.5 lakh. May will also see the introduction of the GV650 cruiser - which shares the GT650R’s engine, at an estimated Rs 5 lakh. Come August, the GV250 cruiser will also join the fun. Hyosung will further bring the naked GT250 - the same Comet that Kinetic imported and sold here a few years ago.

The GT250R boasts a 27PS, 250cc V-twin in a twin-spar frame nearly identical to its 650cc sibling. Then there are upside down forks, monoshock rear suspension and fat tyres. The GT250 promises to neatly bridge the gap between the CBR250R and the Ninja 250R in price as well as performance terms. Currently, the company sells the faired GT650R, the GT650N and the ST7 cruiser through its dealer network.
