BMW will be adding a 640d xDrive variant to both the coupe and convertible variants of the new 6 series. The new variant will have BMW’s TwinPower Turbo technology under the hood with a 3.0-litre, 6-cylinder inline diesel producing 317PS of power and a huge 630Nm of torque. Like all current generation BMWs, this engine is mated to an 8-speed automatic transmission. BMW claims a 0-100 time of just 5.2 seconds and a fuel efficiency of 21.6kmpl, with CO2 emissions of just 153 grams per kilometre.
The xDrive is BMW’s all-wheel drive system, which under normal operating conditions sends 40 per cent of the power to the front wheels and 60 to the rear – ensuring BMW’s traditional rear wheel drive bias. However, depending on the available traction and sensing the intensity of corner carving that its owner is putting it through, it will shift the power onus from rear to front and vice-versa. The BMW 640d xDrive will be on sale in North America this spring
