Hyundai showcases the new Santa Fe at the New York auto show

2012 Hyundai Santa Fe

Hyundai has finally taken the wraps off its new Santa Fe at the ongoing New York auto show. Hyundai has used an evolution of their ‘Fluidic’ design, the ‘Storm Edge’ – which is derived from the dynamic images created by nature during a storm. The new Santa Fe now looks in sync with its competitors like the new Honda CR-V amongst others. Currently in its third generation, ever since its debut in 2000, the Santa Fe has sold more than 2.56 million units world-wide.

The 2012 Santa Fe has now got a more aggressive fascia with its hexagonal grille finished in dark chrome and large tear-drop head lamps. The same theme is carried forward to the rear by the lowered roofline, swept-back windshield, upswept lower edges to the rear side windows and rakish rear windshield angle. Twin tailpipes and a hexagonal mesh set into the lower sections of the front and rear bumpers, add to the sporty look.

Hyundai has retained the wheelbase of the outgoing model – 2700mm while other parameters like length, width and height have been significantly altered. It is now longer, lower and wider than its predecessor. Front and second-row legroom have been increased – by 38mm and 45mm while boot space has been enhanced by 37mm in depth taking the overall luggage capacity to 534-litres.

Three engine options are available as of now with the choice of one petrol and two diesel motors. The engines are mated to 6-speed manual as also automatic transmissions. Hyundai has retained the 200PS 2.2-litre R diesel motor and have added a smaller 2.0-litre diesel engine which makes 150PS of power and 382Nm of torque. The 2.4-litre petrol GDI engine makes 193PS. Hyundai is expected to bring in this new Santa Fe to India by 2013.
