Geneva Motor Show 2012 - Audi unveils new Audi A3

Audi unveiled its new A3 at the Geneva Motor Show 2012. The new A3 is based on the MQB platform which is shared with the Audi Q3. The front end of the hatchback features a single-frame radiator grille which has Xenon headlamps and LED daytime running lamps. The tail lamps are also fitted with LEDs and have a diffuser insert placed with a single or twin tailpipe depending on the type of engine. The 2012 Audi A3 will come with three four-cylinder engines – 1.4-litre, 1.8-litre and 2.0-litre TDI having power outputs of 122, 180 and 143PS respectively. While the 1.8-litre TFSI engine will be mated to a 7-speed dual clutch transmission, the other two engines will be paired with a 6-speed manual box. At a later stage this year, there will be a 1.4-litre TFSI engine and all-wheel drive system. As of now, power will be sent to the front wheels irrespective of the engine option.

Audi claims that weight has been reduced by 80kg for the A3 with the 1.4 TFSI variant tipping the scales at 1,175kg.  Extensive use of aluminium for the front wings and bonnet has helped achieve this feat. The interiors get Audi’s new MMI navigation plus system with a touchpad. Audi has kitted the A3 with radar-assisted adaptive cruise control, park assist, active lane assist, pre sense safety system and traffic sign detection. On the options list is an A3 specific Bang & Olufsen audio system. Boot space has been increased to 365 from the previous 350 litres.

The 2012 Audi A3 is scheduled to go on sale by spring this year in UK.
