NEW DELHI: Japanese bike major Yamaha on Wednesday drove in its 1,680cc super bike VMAX, priced at Rs. 20 lakh (ex-showroom Delhi), the most expensive bike so far launched in India. Notwithstanding this steep price, which can buy a premium luxury car, the company has already got nine bookings and hopes to close the year with 25.

"India is one of the key markets for Yamaha. We are constantly shifting gears to transform the market from utility to pleasure and lifestyle. With the launch of all-new VMAX, Yamaha brings a new credo for the bikers in India," Yamaha Motor India CEO Yukimine Tsuji said after unveiling the bike in the presence of the company's brand ambassador & Bollywood actor John Abraham.

Yamaha already sells two expensive bikes — 1670cc MT01 and 998cc bike YZF-R1 —both priced above Rs 12 lakh. Tsuji said the company has sold 100 units of the R1 and 50 units if the MT01 so far. "While we do not expect sale of many units, we believe there is a set of enthusiasts in India which is interested in brands like the Yamaha VMAX. This is like a dream bike for them, something like a Porsche is in cars," Tsuji said.

However, he admitted that poor road infrastructure was a stumbling block to the sale and acceptance of such products. The entry of Yamaha VMAX comes days after Harley Davidson announced plans to drive in its cruisers next year. "Given rapid development of Indian economy and physical infrastructure, this is the right time to bring the world's greatest motorcycles to one of the world's largest motorcycling nations," Harley-Davidson president, COO Matthew Levatich said earlier.
While India is the world's second-biggest motorcycle market after China, it is primarily a low-cost bike nation. However, a niche segment appears to be developing in the expensive segment, prompting companies like Yamaha, Honda and Suzuki to launch their premium bike range here, all costing around Rs 10 lakh and above.

Yamaha India Launches YZF-R1: Sports Superbike in 2010 @ 12.5 Lakhs

After kick starting the trend two years back, Yamaha is back to fuel the growing appetite for superbikes in India with the launch of Super Sports 2010 YZF-R1 in the Indian market. With the launch of this machine, Yamaha is all set to enhance the joy of Indian riders and experience true 'Art of Engineering', which lies at the heart of Yamaha's creations. Embodying the dynamic and exhilarating spirit that today’s super sport rider demands, the MotoGP-inspired R1 is the most advanced Open-class production motorcycle.
Yamaha was the first two wheeler company to introduce the genre of super sports and torque sports performance bike in India with the launch of YZF-R1 and MT01, two years ago. The introduction of these machines, illustrates company's aim of enriching Indian bikers riding experience while elevating the current biking paradigm.

Signifying the launch, Mr. Yukimine Tsuji, CEO & MD, India Yamaha Motor Pvt. Ltd., said, "While the market for superbikes in India is still limited, consumer response to our previously launched YZF-R1, MT01 and latest VMAX superbikes has been overwhelming. The 2010 YZF-R1 superbike model carries Yamaha's DNA – Performance, Innovation and Design & has one of the most advanced technologies available in the world. Its launch signifies our successful brand transformation efforts in India. In future also, we would continue to launch products that will associate the Indian biking enthusiasts with the combined thrill of technological superiority and artistic brilliance."
The 2010 Yamaha R1 represents a paradigm shift in technology, performance and controllability among litre class sport bikes. The R1 has been designed to be the "Ultimate Cornering Master 1000" of the open super sport class. Inspired by Yamaha's M1 MotoGP race bike, this latest generation 998cc R1 features a crossplane crankshaft design with an uneven firing order to provide outstanding yet easy to control torque and an exceptionally linear throttle feel never experienced before. But there is far more to R1 than just a revolutionary engine.

Crossplane crankshaft technology proven in victory after victory on MotoGP machines provides a high-tech uneven firing interval. Unlike typical inline-four engine design, where the two outer and two inner pistons move together in pairs with 180° intervals, the crossplane crankshaft has each connecting rod 90° with a unique firing order of 270° – 180° – 90° – 180°. This overcomes the inherent fluctuations in inertial torque during each engine revolution, and the accompanying peaky torque characteristics. Instead, combustion torque continues to build, giving the rider more linear throttle response with awesome power and traction out of the corners.

This R1 keeps all the technological superiorities developed for its predecessor: YCC-T (Yamaha Chip Controlled Throttle) is MotoGP inspired fly-by-wire technology used to deliver instant throttle response. YCC-I is Yamaha Chip Controlled Intake which is a variable intake system that broadens the spread of power. The fuel injection system provides optimum air/fuel mixtures for maximum power and smooth throttle response.

The R1 features Yamaha D-MODE (or drive mode) with rider-selectable throttle control maps to program YCC-T performance characteristics for riding conditions.

In keeping with this machine's exceptional cornering ability and crisp handling, the aluminum frame has been designed to offer exceptional rigidity balance. The rear frame is lightweight Controlled-Fill die-cast magnesium, contributing the optimum mass centralization. The bodywork does more than add break-away-from-the-crowd styling with its more serious, less busy look. The side fairing is smooth for a sleek appearance. And, instead of the usual four-bulb headlight design, the R1 has only two projector-type bulbs mounted closer to the nose of the bike. This position rams air ducts closer in for a more compact, smooth look. In addition, the rounded lenses are unique to the supersport industry.

The frame has a combination of uncompromising rigidity where needed along with carefully achieved flex for the precise rigidity balance this bike needs to give the rider the full benefit of its handling and engine characteristics.

The press-formed fuel tank has a shape developed using 3-D simulation analysis technology. The elongated shape of the tank allows it to fit neatly within the frame in a way that promotes concentration of mass.

2010 YZF-R1 will be available in 24 authorized Yamaha CBU dealerships in 13 cities including 4 Yamaha Factory Shops located in Mumbai, Delhi, Pune and Kolkata and is priced at Rs 12.5 Lakhs (Ex-Showroom, All India). The color options will be Yamaha Blue, Metallic Black and Bluish White.

Yamaha believes that developing motorcycles is both a technological and an artistic endeavor. It pursues a level of performance that transcends mere specifications. The goal is to produce technologically superior motorcycles that should have a deep and intangible emotional appeal. It is what defines the company and this is what we call the "Art of Engineering"

Other high-tech prominent features of the bike include analog tachometer, digital speedometer, dual trip meter, odometer, water temperature and lights for neutral, high beam, low fuel and turn signals. The half-cowl fairing design gives aggressive eye-catching naked profile to the bike. Yamaha commitment to technologically advanced machines is accentuated by the bike’s cornering acceleration ability which delivers the maximum amount of drive force in the smoothest manner possible. Yamaha SZ-X : Roadtest

The latest offering from the marque with the triple tuning forks, the SZ-X is designed to please the average Joe commuter looking for style and comfort in his everyday ride and it does the job quite well, says Adil Jal Darukhanawala

After salvaging its lost glory in India with the gorgeously styled FZ16, India Yamaha Motor has shot back into the limelight with its latest power-commuter 150cc offering, the SZ-X. The 150cc commuter segment is fast gaining popularity wherein the buyer is looking for a stylish and comfortable motorcycle with adequate performance without having to restructure his monthly fuel budget. Having introduced the Indian masses to stylish commuting in the form of the FZ-series, with the SZ-X, Yamaha is bringing the fashionable commuting fundamentals within the reach of a wider audience.

Yamaha has seldom churned out bland-looking motorcycles and this belief gets emphasized as one carefully admires the SZ-X's design language. While the Gladiator was crafted with racy looks and sporty decals, the SZ-X has a muscular don't-mess-with-me stance. The competition might call it an attitude problem but it sure seems to be helping the SZ-X, especially in view of the paucity of an aggressive looker in this class. The tank shrouds add a nice touch and gel perfectly with the Megatron-like bikini fairing upfront which holds the headlight and the fancy instrument console in place. But the quality of the console feels very feeble and understated as compared to the SZ-X's brawny appeal and confident poise. The plastic and switchgear quality is well upto the Yamaha standards but the view from the saddle is a little jaded.

As much as the bike appears brutish and belligerent to look at, the SZ-X comforts the rider with just as much ease once you get astride it. The handlebar-seat-footpeg interplay is intended for the daily city commute and it does a good job at it but at the same time it also offers good comfort levels for occasional highway long hauls. Powering the SZ-X is a 153cc single cylinder air-cooled SOHC motor that pumps out 12.1PS of power at 7,500rpm and an impressive 12.8Nm of torque available low down from 4,500rpm. The torque is distributed from lower revs to augment the mid-range grunt from the engine for crowded city use eliminating the need for frequent gear changes to keep it rev-happy. Power is transmitted to the wheel via a silky smooth 5-speed transmission that offers seamless shifts with precise feedback each time you slot into a cog.

The engine is held in place by a rigid and well-balanced diamond-shaped frame that works flawlessly in tandem with the suspension components. The ride is plush and the suspension is configured for a bump-free ride even on our broken roads. However, the soft suspension takes away a little bit from the sporty handling dynamics, but for that, one always has the option to opt for the FZ16 or the FZ-S! Tipping the scales at 132kg, the low power-to-weight ratio of 91.66PS/tonne not only improves the overall performance of the SZ-X but it also presents the bike with nimbler handling. The only complaint is the lack of a disc brake even as an option and although we understand how a disc brake would have altered the pricing equation we think that is an important safety element Yamaha should in any case offer.

That said, the SZ-X has everything in place for what a power-commuter buyer is looking for in a motorcycle : styling, comfort, power and efficiency. The SZ-X though has its work cut out to take on the true blue power commuter on the market today - the Bajaj Discover 150 DTSi. While the Disco doesn't have the sheer sparkle in its visual makeup, it delights in its delivery which is of a very high order. The Yamaha must best the Bajaj on the performance front which it lacks right now and so this constitutes an interesting race to see whether style and turnout can compensate for drive and efficiency. Well Yamaha has done its best to keep prices pegged low, the SZ-X retailing at Rs. 52,000 (ex-showroom, Delhi). The die has been cast and the new 150cc commuter is now out in the open for warfare. Will it get its maker the incremental volumes it desires? Check this space in six months time.

2011 Yamaha YZF- R15 2.0: First Ride

In 2008, Yamaha made a big bang with its super-sports model, the YZF-R15, which won rave reviews across the Indian two-wheeler bazaar for its outstanding race-bike performance. Yamaha is back again, this time with an even sportier YZF-R15. We present a first-hand view of the new machine

It’s almost the beginning of October heat and temperature at the MMST race track near Chennai, clear signs that there is going to be no mercy. The sticky sweat is making it harder to slip into the riding gear as I prepare to get astride the gorgeous looking new Yamaha YZF-R15 2.0, expecting a more thrilling ride on the track than the first time I rode the previous generation R15 during the launch at the same venue back in 2008. The MMST circuit is not exactly silky smooth and has a fair mix of some bumpy corners which truly test the motorcycle’s handling abilities and overall composure. I leave the pits on the new Yamaha YZF-R15, to slowly put in a warm-up lap to build some heat into the tyres and get a feel of the motorcycle. Instantly noticeable is the improved seat with its wider base and harder build for a sportier ride experience. There is huge amount of space to accommodate the tallest of riders and also to swiftly move around the motorcycle on the track.

2011 Yamaha R15

The saddle is in line with international super-sports machines with its design as well as its feel and its posture aiding track riding, while rider comfort takes a backseat. Bad news for tourers then. But Yamaha has been clear about their ideology behind the R15 as a product – it’s a race track scorcher. The first generation machine showed that to us in more ways than one and went on to win the 2010 FMSCI National Motorcycle Racing Championship too, in the hands of Ten10 Racing’s Sarath Kumar (the only Indian MotoGP entrant), beating the long standing king of the Indian two-wheeler racing arena, the TVS Apache RTR. The new 2.0 version of the YZF-R15 aims to build on its predecessor’s lineage and tries to take it to another level. But does it succeed in doing so?

2011 Yamaha R15

That depends on how next year’s national road racing championship shapes up and also what the sales of the new R15 indicate as the two-wheeler market matures to super-sports motorcycles. What we can tell you right now is how much a better or worse the new One-Five is over its previous model. And better it is. But only marginally with regards to performance. Take into consideration the styling and design, and the new R15 2.0 is leaps and bounds ahead of its predecessor. While the front end remains totally untouched, the revision on design starts from the side fairings. The newer design is much more in tune with the international standards, flaunting its sharper lines and pronounced cuts and edges adding to its racy appeal in a committed manner, rather than trying to be conservative and compromising like the first generation YZF-R15. The true blue race bike-like split seat configuration presents that much needed international look to the machine along with the gorgeously styled new tail section. Not to forget, the fatter rear tyre makes sure this time that the proportions are maintained and endow the bike with a big bike appeal rather than a puny feel that many complained about in the first generation One-Five. This one is truly for the hardcore race replica lover. The weight bias has been altered from the previous 47/53 front-rear ratio, to 49/51 on the new machine. The seat height too has been increased by 10mm to 800mm, with a slight change in its rake helping the rider to sit in a much more aggressive style suitable for racing.

2011 Yamaha R15 steel swingarm

Clearly it is a front-biased super-sports model engineered for quicker turn-ins as well as improved feel from the front end. It is a smart way to balance out the quick turning deficit thanks to a significantly longer wheelbase on the new bike. The whole 55mm growth in the wheelbase with its all-new aluminium swingarm means the bike is unwavering in mid-corner even at considerable high speeds, but the old hands who regularly race the One-Five will tell you with conviction that the earlier model had no issues with regard to composure and mid-corner stability. But the added stability will certainly help on our streets in the hands of wannabe Rossis. Er… I meant wannabe Lorenzos. Although the feel from the chassis remains unchanged, with it constantly reminding you of its over-engineered dynamics, providing the rider with the smallest of the details on what is going on between the road and the tyres. So much so that despite being a regular visitor to the MMST circuit, I noticed a few bumps that I didn’t know existed, thanks to the new R15 2.0’s feedback capabilities. Such is the might of the frame and it keeps hinting that it can handle more performance. More horsepower. Is Yamaha listening?

Sadly, on paper, there are no significant performance upgrades to the latest iteration of the R15. The engine remains unchanged with identical power figures of 17PS and 15Nm of torque. Yet, the straight-line acceleration has marginally improved with the new YZF-R15, reaching the 60km/h mark from standstill in 4.1 seconds, while for the 100km/h it took 12.6 seconds.  There is a fairly long list of small changes to the internals of the engine which has helped in an improved power delivery and better torque spread. The gearing has been altered a bit due to changes in the rear wheel and tyre sizes accounting for a slightly improved drive in 5th and 6th gears as well as marginal top speed gain. The altered UCU mapping has strengthened the mid-range, allowing the machine to gain stronger out-of-corner exits with the improved stability only aiding its on-track performance. Another rather small yet impressive change on the new machine is the adoption of a perfect circular type pulley that connects the throttle wire to the throttle valve instead of the previously employed angular pulley. This change has vastly improved the throttle response and the power delivery too feels crisper. Sadly, the performance buck stops here. There is no denying that the highly competent chassis and suspension of the YZF-R15 2.0 could really do with a solid horsepower increment if not a capacity hike. But then, we are going to have to wait for a R250 or something of that sort to come from Yamaha.

2011 Yamaha R15

The new Yamaha YZF-R15 is not a significant upgrade over its predecessor with regards to performance. But it is certainly a more faithful super-sports machine than the older model. With its gorgeous new styling, superb turn-in friendly dynamics and out and out racy ergonomics, this one is truly for the MotoGP devotees. All those who wanted the made-for-Europe YZF-R125 to come to India will now rest peacefully after swinging a leg over the new R15. The fatter 130-section radial MRF Revvz rear tyre with the reworked tail section sporting a Yamaha YZF-R6 inspired tail-light assembly and the split seat set-up indicates that this is a no holds barred race machine that can give any of the international entry level small capacity super-sports a good run for their money. It remains to be seen how many trophies the new Yamaha YZF-R15 can amass on the race track next year, but on the road it will certainly attract a huge amount of eyeballs.
