Toyota's
best-selling sports utility vehicle model, the Toyota Fortuner is set
to make its India foray in September, as per the announcements of Toyota Kirloskar Motor Pvt Ltd. Toyota Fortuner will be assembled at Toyota Kirloskar's factory at Bidadi near Bangalore.
The Toyota Fortuner is one of the three vehicles based on the Toyota Innova platform. The other two being Toyota Innova and Toyota Hilux pick up truck. The Toyota Fortuner will be equipped with a 3.0 liter common rail diesel injection engine from the D-4D engine family and will have full-time four wheel drive.
Toyota Fortuner is targeted at the urban SUV market and will pose competition to Honda CR-V, Mitsubishi Outlander and to some extent the Ford Endeavour. Speaking about the proposed launch, Mr. Sandeep Singh, deputy managing director (marketing), TKM said "Entering the SUV space was a natural extension to our multi-purpose vehicle (MPV) business. Though we already have the Toyota LandCruiser Prado (petrol variant) in this segment, Toyota Fortuner will be our actual entry into the Indian SUV market."
He added "The Toyota Fortuner is an important addition to our product line-up in India and we are currently in the process of finalizing the details for the launch."
The Toyota Fortuner will enter India as a complete knock down (CKD) unit and will be assembled at TKM's Bidadi plant. This much awaited SUV will wear a price tag of Rs.20 lakh. The Toyota Fortuner will be assembled in India and the company is looking at higher volumes to capture the luxury SUV segment. Toyota Fortuner will compete with other luxury cars like the Mercedes Benz, Audi and BMW.
Toyota Kirloskar is constructing a new 100,000-unit-a-year plant at the same location in Bidadi. The company intends to begin production of its first "strategic" small car in India at the new plant which would be launched in 2111.
