Fiat
has unveiled the Viaggio (Italian for journey) at the Beijing Auto
Show. This is the Chinese version of the new Dodge Dart saloon launched
at Detroit in January. The Viaggio will be made by Fiat’s new joint
venture with the Chinese manufacturer GAC. This is the first Fiat-badged
model to use the ‘Compact Wide’ architecture that is related to the
Alfa Romeo Giulietta and will be used for a variety of future Fiat and
Chrysler products. Fiat has had two false starts in China, with Nanjing Automotive and Chery, and has now set a target of 300,000 sales a year by 2014. Fiat
will be offering the Viaggio with a 1.4-litre T-jet motor in 122PS or
152PS guise mated to either a 6-speed DCT or a five-speed manual. The
new GAC factory in Hunan province will start producing the Viaggio in
June.
